Blog wrap-up

Well, the reason for this blog's existence has come to an end. Normal programming will now resume on www.seasidepirates.com. This site will remain available for the foreseeable future however (it's run on a free platform so there's no economic reason to close it) so feel free to come back and browse whenever you like.

I said at the start that this blog was a bit of an experiment and I wasn't sure if it would work. And of course the standard by which it has to be judged is the amount of use it got. So how did we go? Needless to say a little bit of geek-ery can help answer the question:

Google Analytics tracks what it calls "absolute unique visitors" - which roughly corresponds to distinct individual users in a given day - so I've got a pretty good idea how many different people have used the site. Given that we had about 40 entrants in the meet, and given that the site was only announced on our club web page and only came into existence a few days before the games, I figured a hit rate of maybe 20 people a day would be pretty good. What we got was:

Day 1: 49 unique visitors
Day 2: 104
Day 3: 106
Day 4: 111
Day 5: 85
Day 6: 98
and a big finish on Day 7 with 179.

Gotta be happy with that.

Interestingly while the vast majority of visitors were local we also gained an audience as far afield as the UK, Japan, South Africa and even Thailand.

Thanks to everyone who used this site and particular thanks to everyone who posted comments and photos. I like to think that having this place to share and keep in touch added a little extra to the whole WMG experience. It certainly did for me.

Cheers,

Barry

The almost medalists!

After a week of swimming, Amanda Gillis and Viv Allen have formed a new branch of the Pirates – the ‘almost medallists’ or ‘the touched out medalists’. Day after day of just missing out on medals or more importantly, ‘official placings’, by 100s of seconds, we rewarded ourselves this afternoon with our own medal (please share in our delight! See the photo) – but we had to purchase it – a commemorative one! The most annoying part for me is doing a relay swim 29.8 that would have got me 2nd place in the 50 FS race! Arghhhhh...

Great Time @ World Masters Games

Hi Everyone,

Just want to say  I’ve had a great time in the pool this week. I’m really happy with all of my results and have be privileged to be in a couple of very successful relay teams. Thanks to all Pirates and team members. I would also like to say a huge thanks to Jane and the organising committee, all the pirates who volunteered their time this week to make it a very successful carnival. THANKS!! I Well I still have 1 more swim to go the 3k tomorrow on my birthday so I’m hoping to just have a good time and enjoy the experience and celebrate the rest of the weekend. Thanks for the memories.

Training Sunday

To the whole Seaside Pirates team

I am sure you will all agree that it was really great to be part of a successful and high quality carnival.  Hats off to all of you who challenged themselves to swim at these games.

It was wonderful to see the many medal winners (some who swam some outstanding times).  It was also very satisfying to see those that were quietly going about their events and enjoying their first international carnival and, in many instances, swimming personal best times. Success comes in many forms.

For those that are interested, there will be a training session on Sunday at Terrey Hills.  Jeff Price has promised that it will be a bit lighter than normal to help get the soreness out of those tired muscles.   So, come along, even if it is only to discuss what went right or wrong in your particular events.

While it is fresh in your minds, start to think about some objectives for 2010, write them down and then start the process to achieve them (starting this Sunday).

Cheers

Steve Hyde
